Americans on Food Stamps

Since June, the Department of Agriculture said on Thursday that more than 35 million Americans have food stamps. The number is increasing with 22 percent more Americans since June 2008. The numbers of Americans increase more than 700,000 have food stamps and they are in need in help.

The USDA administers the food stamps program and help Americans in need of help, it was established by the Congress in 1964 and later on revised by the Food Stamp Act of 1977. The average recipient gets around $133 in assistance while the household is around $239.

The statistics show that many Americans are still struggling with the economic downturn. Americans need help even the $4.6 billion in food stamps doesn't help in much.

The main reason so many more Americans have food stamps now is because most of them are unemployed and have been greatly affected by the economy. As time passes, more and more people need the extra help as the number of poverty-stricken Americans increases. Many need all the extra help they can get including help for essential necessities like food. Even though Americans may not receive much in food stamps, at least they're lucky enough to get some help.

Food stamps are being handed out to more people. This means that even more people are being affected by the economy. This should open the president's eyes, that he should focus on fixing the economy first, or at least improve it. I understand he;s busy, but he should do something, like give a speech, to let the people know he's still planning on helping.

Yomy,
It's really sad to see that an abundance of Americans have switched to food stamps as a way of life. I am not degrading this life style, but some of these people who are now receiving food stamps are those who used to be working middle class professionals who were unfortunate to lose their jobs. It's difficult to find jobs right now because of money flow deficit and budget cuts. Hence, as unemployment increases, more people become homeless or are in need of government aid, such as food stamps. In my opinion, I think that the President should loan money to certain needy corporations and banks to get the flow of money and employment generating.

Though I believe too much government assistance destroys self-reliance and ambition, I am all for helping the unfortunate. Reach out Americans to your fellow neighbors those who really demonstrate the necessity, I will not criticize that. However, granting government assistance to those who can provide for themselves seems unreasonable, insulting, and selfish from their part towards tax payers and those truly in need. The government should work towards regulating the Food stamp system; sure enough they will reprimand many and help several others in need. Fact is many obnoxious and ignorant Americans abuse the country’s generosity. Yes unemployment has impacted the Food stamp program greatly, but I strongly encourage America to help those unemployed out looking for a job not those perfectly healthy individuals who plan on living off the government.

I also believe that why so many people are depending on foos stamps now to help them is because they have lost their jobs or their earnings are simply not enough. Like Elizabeht has said it is selfish for those who can provide for themselves to get food stamps or other type of government aid. On the other hand, I think that what President obama should have focused on first should have been the economy. If the national government focuses on other things that can probably wait longer the economy is just going to get worst!
